Pourquoi s’engager aujourd’hui ? Pour qui et pour quelle finalité?

Ces interrogations sont souvent posées simplement par les jeunes qui rejoignent nos armées, mais aussi par les bénévoles de nos associations, ou tout simplement par les salariés de nos entreprises, lorsqu’on partage avec eux nos propres engagements de simples citoyens, de réservistes ou de professionnels. Les réponses ne sont jamais aisées car elles sont souvent très éloignées de leurs vécus ou attentes, souvent très hédonistes et matérialistes. L’idéalisme ou les valeurs profondes animant nos sociétés sont encore bien là, mais elles n’ont plus une place exaltant l’engagement. Nous ne pouvons pas nous appuyer sur des fondamentaux moraux et culturels comme ce fut le cas dans le passé pour de nombreuses générations…

Pour autant s’engager c’est l’acte qui permet d’affirmer fondamentalement sa responsabilité et sa liberté face à soi-même et aux autres. C’est l’inverse du renoncement qui débouche toujours sur de la soumission. C’est la décision suprême d’une vie lorsque nous sommes confrontés à des rendez-vous majeurs. Souvent c’est la seule qui a compté lorsque l’on fait le bilan de son propre cheminement.

Où en sommes-nous sur le plan sociétal et comment faire pour resacraliser la notion d’engagement à tous les niveaux ?
